Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], April 26 (ANI): AIIMS Bhubaneswar has introduced its state-of-the-art Robotic Knee Replacement facility, the first of its kind in Eastern India under the government sector.
Speaking about this achievement, Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, Dr Gurudip Das said, “Yesterday we did the first robotic knee replacement in Eastern India. It is one of the first government hospitals in India where robotics has been used to perform the procedure… This is quite convenient for the surgeries that are easy, but with complex cases or with deformities, we are concerned with the level of success rate… I am thankful to the government of India, the Prime Minister and our Executive Director…”
Das expressed his gratitude towards the government of India, the Prime Minister and our Executive Director for the advanced technology.
He further added, “The patient was a 66-year-old lady who came to us with a severely deformed knee, and we performed this surgery with the robot. The patient is doing well… This is the first government institution in Odisha and probably the first in India to have this gadget… When we do this surgery manually, it takes around 30-60 minutes, but with robotic equipment, it takes us a few extra minutes because it takes time to get the exact precision. When we get acquainted with the device, we will be able to perform this faster… It is like driving a car that takes time to get acquainted with the entire system…”

The first-ever robotic knee replacement surgery was successfully performed by the Department of Orthopaedics on a 66-year-old female patient with precision and cutting-edge technology. Under the expert team at the Department of Orthopaedics, the surgery was a success, and the patient is in stable condition.
While, AIIMS Bhubaneswar Executive Director Dr Ashutosh Biswas said, “This was the first case and was successfully conducted. I would like to congratulate the department and the entire team, particularly the orthopaedic department… This technology is extremely valuable because it assists the surgeon with precise guidance, increasing accuracy of the procedure and enhancing the chances of 100% successful outcome…”

Biswas congratulated the department and the entire team, particularly the orthopaedic department for the successful surgery from the robotic techonlogy.
“It is a crucial tool that supports surgeons, especially in complex cases where decisions about incisions, cuts and retention need to be highly precise… Another key benefit is that we do not charge anything extra for using this technology… Our doctors are well-trained and have performed the procedure without any complications so far… We plan to use this technology across other departments and surgeries as well. Knee replacement procedures are particularly common; our institute conducts around 150 such surgeries each month. So this advancement will greatly benefit both our patients and institute,” Biswas said.
This major milestone sets a new standard for advanced healthcare in the region. (ANI)
